4 January 2012
Strengthens resources in Canada and Russia
International legal practice Norton Rose Group today confirmed that leading Canadian law firm Macleod Dixon joined the Group on 1 January 2012.
As a result of the merger, Norton Rose Group enters Latin America and Central Asia for the first time with three new offices in Venezuela, Colombia and Kazakhstan, and significantly strengthens existing capabilities in Canada and Russia.
The merger increases Norton Rose Group’s resources across its key industry strengths and in particular in the energy, and infrastructure and mining and commodities sectors.
Peter Martyr, Group Chief Executive, Norton Rose Group said:
“This is a great step going forward for the Group. This merger delivers real strength in energy and mining in emerging markets such as Latin America, Central Asia and Russia. In Canada, the merger means we now have nearly 700 lawyers across all the key markets, making us one of the top 3 legal practices in the nation.”
John Coleman, Managing Partner of Norton Rose Canada said:
“Norton Rose Canada can serve clients in new ways with a broader international reach and unmatched strength in key business sectors. With offices in Latin America and as a market leader in Calgary and western Canada, we are a new Canadian powerhouse.”
Bill Tuer, Integration Partner of Norton Rose Canada said:
“We are very excited about helping our clients continue to grow in Canada and globally. We can now support them through stronger offices in Canada and in key international markets. In the energy sector, there is a strong global focus on western Canada and more than ever, investment is flowing into and out of the region. We've expanded globally for 20 years and creating Norton Rose Canada was a client-driven decision.”
The enlarged Norton Rose Group is one of the five largest international legal practices, with over 2,900 lawyers in 43 offices throughout Europe, Asia, Australia, Canada, Africa, the Middle East, Latin America and Central Asia.
The Group specialises in the six key industry sectors of financial institutions; energy; infrastructure, mining and commodities; transport; technology and innovation; and pharmaceuticals and life sciences.
Canada and Latin America
Norton Rose Canada was established on 1 January 2012 through the merger of Norton Rose OR LLP and Macleod Dixon. It is part of Norton Rose Group.
The merger has grown the Group’s existing Calgary and Toronto practices to over 370 lawyers. With close to 700 lawyers in Canada, Norton Rose Canada is one of the country’s top 3 legal practices and one of a small number with a significant presence in each of its three main markets (Calgary, Toronto and Montréal).
In addition, Norton Rose Canada adds 60 lawyers in Latin America, based in Caracas (Venezuela) and Bogotá (Colombia).
Kazakhstan and Moscow
As a result of the merger, Norton Rose Group has gained a new office in Almaty, Kazakhstan and expanded significantly in Moscow, Russia.
The office in Almaty consists of a well-established team of 12 lawyers, providing highly experienced, on-the-ground expertise which complements the practice’s existing energy and mining capability in Central Asia. The practice is tier 2 for ‘General Business Law: Energy and Natural Resources’ in Kazakhstan [Chambers Global 2011].
In Moscow, the existing team will grow to 40 lawyers as a result of the merger and will occupy a market leading position in the Russian energy and mining sectors. In Russia, the practice is ranked tier 1 for ‘Energy and Natural Resources: Mining’ [Chambers Global and Chambers Europe 2011] and tier 2 for ‘Energy and Natural Resources’ [Chambers Global and Chambers Europe 2011].
